Dissolution Mechanism of Semicrystalline Poly(viny1 alcohol) in Water

چکیده
Changes occurring in the degree of crystallinity and lamellar thickness distribution of poly(viny1 alcohol) (PVA) samples during dissolution in water were investigated. PVA samples of three different molecular weights were crystallized by annealing a t 90,110, and 120°C. The initial degrees of crystallinity measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATRFTIR) varied from 43 to 60% and the average lamellar thicknesses measured by DSC ranged from 50 to 400 A. PVA dissolution was followed at 25, 35, and 45°C from 30 s up to 195 min. Lamellar thicknesses were determined as a function of dissolution time using DSC. There was an initial drastic decrease in the degree of crystallinity, which leveled off to a fairly constant value before reaching zero by the time the polymer dissolved completely. Increase in molecular weight led to lesser number of crystals, but with larger average lamellar thickness, which were more stable in the presence of water. Increase in crystallization temperature or decrease in dissolution temperature led to larger average lamellar thickness. Based on these findings, a dissolution mechanism involving unfolding of the polymer chains of the crystal was proposed.

Crystal dissolution-controlled release systems. II. Metronidazole release from semicrystalline poly(vinyl alcohol) systems.
Novel semicrystalline, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based phase erosion systems were developed. The rate of drug release from these systems is controlled by the rate of crystal dissolution. PVA devices loaded with metronidazole were exposed to temperatures ranging from 90 to 120 C for times of 10-90 min to obtain samples with different degrees of crystallinity. Degrees of crystallinity were measur...

A crackand pinhole-free composite membrane consisting of an a-alumina support and a modified y-alumina top layer which is thermally stable up to 1100°C was prepared by the sol-gel method. The supported thermally stable top layer was made by dipcoating the support with a boehmite sol doped with lanthanum nitrate. The temperature effects on the microstructure of the (supported and unsupported) La...

A model was developed to describe the overall dissolution kinetics of semicrystalline PVA gels prepared by freezing and thawing techniques. The dissolution process was described as a three-step mechanism: detachment-, diffusion-, and disentanglement-controlled dissolution. The unfolding of crystalline regions due to detachment and diffusion was calculated. The lamellar thickness of a PVA crysta...

INTRODUCTION Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a highly hydrophilic, nontoxic and biocompatible semicrystalline polymer with excellent properties such as strength, water solubility, gas permeability and thermal characteristics. PVA is available in a variety of degrees of hydrolysis (DH) because it is derived from the hydrolysis (or alcoholysis) of poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc).1–3 The properties of PVA...

Semicrystalline films of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared by annealing amorphous PVA films at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of 85°C, thus allowing the macromolecules to form crystallites, which stabilized the films and made them behave as if they were chemically cross-linked. Films were prepared by casting a 15% aqueous PVA solution onto glass slides and annealing t...
